Rachel Swinburne is a Bermuda based British interdisciplinary artist. She is undertaking a Masters of Fine Arts at Emily Carr University of Art & Design in Vancouver. Rachel’s practice is anchored through the reinterpreting of site-specific places, usually abandoned structures, drawing attention to their unique histories.
In previous works, Rachel has focused on places with an overlooked history; in various stages of rewilding as the site restores and repairs itself as nature forcibly takes over. Rachel responds intuitively to these selected geographies by investigating the site’s origin through photography and extensive research before developing an appropriate outcome for the work. These places become a series of historical markers connected through locality, narrative and futurity.
Since relocating to Bermuda, she has shown work in several prestigious exhibitions on the island including the Bermuda Biennial and the Masterworks Charman Prize, showcasing her practice through public art, installation, drawing, digital and photography. Rachel’s current practice centers on her site-specific investigations into various architectural structures and their stories.
