This work responds to a continual fascination with how individuals navigate the constructs of the physical environment. I am interested in the impact of urban planning in directing human movement around specific locations. The inspiration has been largely drawn from my relocation to Bermuda, which has allowed me to look anew at the established boundaries that denote private and public realms. I am investigating how far societal expectations influence decision-making. Several contributing factors dictate movement through space, for example those areas marked with signs such as No Loitering or Private Property.
For ‘Plotting Trajectories’ Deploying cartography, I explore the variation of negated space by tracking patterns through GPS mapping of my own movements. The emphasis shifts to the precise linear paths that have become abstracted from their original locality. Both routine and deviation are reinterpreted through determined shapes and color-coding. The cataloguing of each journey is presented uniformly and systematically. Only the imperfections and wavering of the line denotes the connection to the human nonconformity to the prerequisite designed space. The notion of shared space is often nuanced, as human paths are transient in nature. I aim to mirror the subtlety in the medium though the use of adjustable light sources to illuminate the recorded mapping.
